Download: Conspec Connects to RS485 Modbus Devices with MatrikonOPC Server for Modbus

"After experimenting with a few OPC servers, we chose to go with Matrikon’s OPC server because of the simple set-up and ease of use. We have not encountered any problems with the Matrikon software and we find their products to be very stable and reliable."
Abdullah Dhooma,
Project Engineer at Conspec

Conspec Controls is a global company that provides gas detection systems and sensors, high-tech environmental monitoring systems and underground radio communications systems to clients in the mining industry. They needed to provide a reliable connection between their gas monitors and applications using the Modbus protocol for monitoring programs such as Rockwell RSView32 HMI. The proprietary legacy solution did not satisfy the networking requirements for larger and progressive mining complexes. In their initiatives to integrate existing PLC controls with Conspec’s advanced next generation monitoring and control devices, Conspec turned to Matrikon OPC for a connectivity solution.

"After experimenting with a few OPC servers, we chose to go with Matrikon’s OPC server because of the simple set-up and ease of use," says Abdullah Dhooma, project engineer at Conspec. "We decided to use Matrikon’s OPC Server for Modbus to enable us to connect the client applications to our Modbus RS485 devices." The most recent project connected approximately 400 points scheduled to poll every second. Of the 400 points, 5% were written to on a periodic basis.

OPC is a published connectivity standard that provides a consistent method of communicating between devices, or data sources, and applications. Dhooma explains. "By using the OPC server we were able to meet our clients’ conn
