ABB, a leader in power and automation technologies, designed a Continuous Emissions Monitoring Systems (CEMS) for LUKOIL Neftochim, the biggest refinery in the Balkan region of Bulgaria. This system enables LUKOIL to collect emissions data and generate reports in order to comply with new emissions legislation. The most difficult part of the project was establishing the connection between gas analyzers, controllers and the SCADA application. To make the connection, ABB looked to Matrikon OPC for a robust and reliable solution.
Kolyo Stoilov, ABB’s Automation System Manager in Bulgaria, was responsible for overseeing the project, which involved connecting an ABB Advant AC31 Controller and gas analyzers to ABB’s SCADA Portal, a Human System Interface. A total of 16 analog points were read from the gas analyzers and another 32 points read from the Advant AC31 controller.
All communication protocols spoke Modbus, but the versions of Modbus used by the analyzers and the SCADA application were not compatible. To establish the connection, a robust server was needed and Matrikon’s OPC Server for Modbus was integrated. The installation and configuration of Matrikon’s OPC Server for Modbus is user-friendly
