"With Matrikon’s support, we were able to integrate and complete the project in just two months."
Emilio Dominguez,
ABB Project Manager
ABB was retained by one of the largest private electrical groups in the world, to integrate two redundant GE Mark V turbine controllers at a new power plant in Spain. The controllers were going to tie into the plant’s main DCS, an ABB Advant control system. Process Portal B and MiscroSCADA client applications were used to visualize process data from the turbine controllers. To make the connection, ABB chose to integrate OPC to read and write 1,098 points from each turbine for a total of 2,196 points.
ABB project manager Emilio Dominguez had integrated OPC using Matrikon products and turned to Matrikon again for a connectivity solution. It so happened that Matrikon was at that time developing an OPC Server for GE Mark V, so Matrikon and ABB used the Endesa power plant as a beta site in which to implement and improve the server.
"We chose Matrikon OPC because our previous experience with Matrikon had been very positive and we knew that our companies could work together to develop the best OPC-based solution for this integration project," Dominguez says.
The implementation went very smoothly, with Matrikon OPC’s support desk contributing valuable input on adapting the solution to fit the configuration of the plant. The project proved successful – now all information from the turbine controller is integrated in the main DCS with the same operational concept as the rest of the plant.
"Matrikon’s product and their support were very good from the beginning to the end of the project," Dominguez says. "With Matrikon’s support
