Devices that use serial protocols abound in the industrial workplace, yet their integration within plants has eluded most users. Many devices including transmitters, electronic scales, process analyzers, PLCs and even some DCSs use proprietary serial interfaces to communicate with the outside world.
Manufacturers who integrated these devices with the rest of their plant used to have only two options.
First, they could continue to transfer information by hand, or second, they could pay to have expensive interfaces developed that would automate the necessary data transfer. However, with the proliferation of OPC, manufacturers now have a third option that enables them to successfully deploy their own OPC interfaces, without programming, using OPC Generic Information Exchange (Genie) technology.
