The Building Automation industry has long ago recognized the advantages of standardizing on an open protocol such as BACnet to make it possible to communicate among devices from different vendors. However, as the data requirements continue to grow throughout the enterprise, the challenges of sharing BA data have also grown because most of the systems outside of BA are not BACnet aware. This paper examines the differences between BACnet and OPC and shows how the two can be used together to allow applications to access BA data without requiring applications to natively support BACnet.
